35

Thank you to everyone for the emails and comments wishing me a happy birthday. I really appreciate it.

I turned 35 today but I really don’t feel a day over 43.

Happy Birthday Dino

September 25th, 2007 |

Yeah so uhhh it looks like Nicastro-talk has completely overthrown my little blog here but yesterday was Dino’s new baby’s birthday, today is Dino’s birthday, and tomorrow is Sophia Gustave’s burthday and my birthday. So it looks like all of you are going to need to dig deep into the kid’s college fund to buy all of us some totally rad gifts. Thank you in advance.

Dino is one year and one day older than me. That means for today Dino is way older than me. I’m the young punk rockin’ buck and he’s the veteran who would rather play everything with brushes. It’s good to be a kid.

Giovanni Thomas Nicastro

September 24th, 2007 |

Today at 3:13 PM Gina Nicastro (Dino‘s wife) gave birth to an 8 pound baby boy named Giovanni Thomas Nicastro. Congratulations to them. The world can never have too many Nicastros as far as I’m concerned.

Migraines and Sundays

September 17th, 2007 |

Yesterday and today were bad days. Yesterday I said a bunch of things that I wish I hadn’t and today some things happened at work that make me want to say things today that I’ll wish I hadn’t tomorrow.

I don’t know if it was the stress at work or what but I got what I think may have been my first official migraine headache today. I can’t say that I’ve ever even had a very noteworthy headache at all. But this one today almost made me puke. I came home and took a fistful of pain killers (two Excedrin) and writhed around in our bed for about an hour and a half. By the time Angel got home I was pretty much OK. I hope that doesn’t happen again soon.

I don’t know if any of you notice these kinds of things but the WordPress theme I use for my blog doesn’t work very well in Internet Explorer. In fact, there are some weird thing that happen with Firefox too. If you look up at the top left under “Pages” you see About and then a zero and then Blog and a 1 and on and on. Those numbers aren’t supposed to show. They didn’t until recently. I think. There are a lot of other things that bother me that I guess I probably shouldn’t point out. Anyhoo, I’ve been diligently looking for a new theme and I found one that I really like but Angel thinks it’s too slick looking. So I smacked her mouth. Here it is. I’ll keep looking.

The Runs

September 14th, 2007 |

I saw these diapers at the store the other day. If you step back from your screen a little and squint your eyes it looks like these children are suffering the same intestinal woes that plagued me for half of 2006.

Jon McLaughlin

September 10th, 2007 |

A couple of months ago when a bunch of us went to see Jonny Lang the opener was a guy named Jon McLaughlin. He sounded good but none of us really paid that much attention to him because we were too busy catching up on each other’s lives since some of us hadn’t hung out in quite a long time. So a few weeks ago I caught the video for his song ‘Beautiful Disaster’ and was completely blown away. I really regretted that I hadn’t watched his set when I had the chance.

This song has a certain brand of emotion that I’ve always found very attractive and have tried to achieve in many of my own songs. This flavor of sadness is particularly appealing to me.

Here’s a link to the video on YouTube. They’ve got embedding disabled so you’ll have to watch it there. It’s very much worth your time.

Riley Are Smarrt?

September 7th, 2007 |

Last night we were given definitive proof that Riley is in fact a chip off the old block. It turns out that Riley – just like his old man – actually is smarter than everyone else.

It was “Meet the Teacher” night at Riley’s new school and we were very pleased with how things went. When it was our turn to talk to his teacher the conversation went something like this.

Teacher – (Looking around like she’s about to tell a racist joke or sell us some pot) Soooo…uhhh…you guys know that Riley is…like…REALLY smart, right?

Us – Well…yeah…I mean…yeah…we think he’s pretty cool.

Teacher – I’m serious. He is extremely advanced.

Us – Wow.

Teacher – I’ve considered calling you to see if we can move him up to the first grade.

So it turns out they gave him a reading test and he got through the 2nd grade reading level and they stopped because they said he was getting so bored. She said that since Riley just turned five that he would probably not fit in so well in the first grade because he is young for his age…or however you say that. So we all decided to just leave him where he is and let him academically own and humiliate all the other kids to get back at their parents for how they treated me.

When she was telling us all this I was having a really hard time not crying. It made me so thankful for and proud of him. God has really blessed us with an amazing kid. You know the scene in Forrest Gump where the kid is watching TV and Forrest learns that he’s the dad and that the kid is smart? That scene makes me cry every time. That’s how I felt last night. Learning that your kid is not a remedial slug like yourself is a very touching thing.

I haven’t posted any music in a long time so I figured I’d put something up today. I’ve talked before about a song I wrote called ‘Sin No More’. It’s one that will be on the new record. Dino told me the other night that it’s one of his favorite songs of mine.

I’ve been working on the guitar part a lot lately and in an attempt to really get it under my fingers I’ve been practicing it very fast. So this clip is the guitar part played about twice as fast as the song actually is. This is just to the end of the first chorus. It’s a little sloppy at the end but whatever.

I Hate Cats

September 4th, 2007 |

Yesterday morning (Labor Day) at 5:45 AM I was rudely awakened by the alarm on my phone. I had forgotten to disable that particular alarm for the holiday.  My phone was in the kitchen – perhaps the most resonant room in our house – and I was in my bed. In an attempt to not let the alarm wake everyone in the house I hurriedly scurried out of bed, in the dark, down the hall, and into the kitchen.

Cats are funny.

Especially when they leave fresh, warm puke in a high traffic area of the house. Especially when it’s in the middle of the night. In the dark. Yeah funny. Get it?!? Hardy Har Har Cat Devil!

So my right foot hit the puke slick and sent me furiously horizontal at about 4 feet in the air. You’ve seen the cartoons when somebody slips on a banana peel right? That was me. I landed tail bone first with a loud grunt. If the sound of the alarm didn’t wake everyone, the sound of the gigantic toppling oaf certainly did.

It still hurts. I’ve also got a huge scrape on my shoulder where it hit the doorway on my way down. Good times.

Back With Nicastro

September 1st, 2007 |

Last night marked  – Wow, before I go any further let me just say that spilling Dr. Pepper all down in your keyboard is not the fantastic idea it may at first appear to be. I have to use both hands to push my S key and my space bar – the official return to Dino and me making sweet music together. We got together at the warehouse where we used to rehearse (the same place ‘Invention of the Wheel’ and ‘Posthumously, The Formula Kid’ were recorded) to track the drums for Macarena Shoes.

It went really well. I haven’t been in the room with Dino playing drums in a long, long time and I’ve certainly missed it. He played a beautiful track and his drums sounded phenomenal as always. We tracked the drums on his Pro Tools rig so I don’t have the tracks here but as soon as I can get them from him I’ll finish mixing the tune and we’ll officially have the first song for my album completed. That’s a very cool thing.

If you’re interested in the music Dino has been writing lately go and check out his My Space page. He’s got a brand new tune on there call “On the And” that kind of reunited The Imps for a song. The Imps was the band Dino and Steve played in before The Drew Johnson Band. In fact, one of the songs from The Imps album is also on Dino’s page. It’s called ‘Open Hand’ and was always one of my favorite songs from that record. Everyone who owns that album should be very glad. It is a rare gem.

There’s also a song on his page called The Hunt Spain that Dino and I did together a few months back. Very short but very cool.
